Episode 10: The Spiritual Role Of A Prostitute

A female teacher in the mixed boarding school that I attended used to compare us girls to a tin of cocoa; you remember the one which had a foil inside. "The first time you let a man touch your breasts or private parts, then you have opened the lid. The moment you lose your virginity, the foil is gone. After that, every time you have sex , the cocoa gets depleted. If you are not careful the rightful owner will find there is nothing left for him". At the face of it , it was a polite way to dissuade us from adolescence sex, but a little deeper it implied we girls didn't really belong to ourselves but to some man somewhere, who was supposed to have all the cocoa. Our role in society it seemed was to prepare for this man.

Certainly it was a simplistic and traditional  way to illustrate our purpose in society. But , now, many years later  when I think of it , I wonder what is my role in society? Or to hide in the safety of numbers, what is the role of us, prostitutes, in society? I read in college about theories which tried to say that everybody has a role in society. You know the 'I am because we are' kind of theories. That the other person functions because I function or something of the sort. Removing one person disorganizes society. Would our society then be disrupted if  prostitutes were removed ? The same way it would go hay wire  if the police were taken away?

A quick answer would be no, apparently because we contribute nothing of value to society. And in our odd country here, we even don't pay taxes. All we do, as some would say, is steal, spread diseases and separate families. But that would be ignoring our spiritual role. Yes, I know how it sounds for a prostitute to talk about spirituality, but I actually mean. We are priests of our own kind, ministering to our flock; the men. Ignoring all the hullabaloo, the role of priests is to provide emotional stability to those who congregate. A role we have played, in a more practical way, to many a man we have slept with.

Men come to us because they want to get something out of themselves. And not the product of their balls, for if that was the case, they would fare better, saving time and money by playing with themselves. Its something intangible, what the priests here call pepo, some sort of 'demon'. Men come to us possessed by stress, frustrations, mid life crisis, career stagnation, work challenges and we exorcise them in a more pleasurable way, which doesn't involve sitting on a pew for hours listening to a man or woman blaming your spiritual afflictions on your refusal to give tithe.

But why a prostitute? Unfortunately its because a prostitute is considered to be close to the dark of the earth;a somehow a priest of darkness. But more formal and effective than witchdoctors. Men sex prostitute with some roughness, haste, urgency and complexity not shown anywhere else. I see the difference always when sleeping with a man who doesn't know I am a prostitute and one who knows. The face of a man after a session with a prostitute, is that of relieve and freshness, something which I can bet my money making organ cant be noted after a time with the kept woman. FYI a prostitute , mark you, is very different from the side girlfriend. The latter is the woman snatcher, and who in reality is in competition with the wife while providing nothing more than sexual pleasure . However that's a story for another day.

It might be a little hard to get all this, but like with all matters spiritual only those who honestly practice a faith, understand it. Remove prostitutes and the productivity of the country would be affected; families would break up, and more people would end up in asylums. The call for the government to legalize our trade, should not because we are to pay taxes, but because we contribute to the well being of the nation, same as churches.

  1. the human soul is a reflection of the life of society. Your reflection shows that your soul lacks a purpose in society due to being misused as a prostitute. Thus the society would be in your state of stupor were it not for the church and Jesus Christ. Infact the church is compared to a woman who when asked by her husband Jesus Christ to stay faithfull and does so is blessed but if she decides to become unfaithfull and seek other spirits/men then the devil takes over and chaos/destruction ensues.

  2. There's a running joke that some churches had the term "ltd" removed from their registrations.

I love your literature, you're amazing, lady sue!

  3. This is some of the most refeshing writing I have read on a blog in a long time. I read all your posts at one go and still salivating for more. One would say that it is unfortunate that it relates to what society considers an ill, I think however let the man who has not had some "professional help" stand up. Keep it up Sue...let the stories flow.

  4. @ Anonymous interesting observation about my soul lacking purpose in society. For now I will assume I have a purpose, but whether its the right purpose or not is a something I will discover some day.

    @Cuppatea Thanks for your compliments.

@ Baba Huh there are many men who have not had 'professional help'.Thanks

  6. Well done Sue. You speak the reality the way it is, not the way it is supposed to be. Spirituality and 'Ladies of the night' is abit far fetched but your post is so refreshing! Your interaction with your clients must be very intellectual. Keep the posts coming. This is the first time that I'm reading Nairobi Nights and I've liked it. No pretense. Just raw reality in a very simple language!

  7. You are simply genius, Sue. I have used the services of prostitutes much more than priests in my life. I cannot go a week without the very rush that you describe so well. When I am with a prostitute, I have nothing to proof, I bear all, I let go and the relief is beyond words, even though I rarely last more than a few minutes

  19. I also work as a sex worker - in Sydney, Australia. This is my first visit to your blog and i love it! It's great to see how many positive comments you are receiving. I hope you can ignore the negative ones. I'm astonished that some people doubt your genuineness. I know so many intelligent, witty, entertaining and wise sex workers, to me it's obvious that you are one of us!

  20. i like you sue. i like your writing. i like your prowess in words. i like you approach. you are not looking for approval or reassurance. you are not whining about how you would have become a different human being in another life. you are not regretting anything. nothing. you are simply pouring the truth out. your truth. and you are in the least entitled to that sue. yes you are. all we are doing is following your blog with unfounded passion and reading your daily updates. nobody was put to it. so, i don't understand why the judgmental comments. but i am meant to believe you strong shock absorbers. KEEP UP WITH YOUR HABIT OF UNLEASHING YOUR DAILY THOUGHTS UNTO US..

  21. I just learned about this blog and have been reading through them hungrily. Great writing, Sue. I used to live in Nairobi (I ran a business) and I will admit I picked up some girls, before fear of disease became overwhelming and I forced myself to quit. I became good friends with a few girls I met and acquired deep admiration and respect for all the women in the trade. Most I knew did it out of desperation, generally to feed their kids. One or two were college graduates who couldn't fine work and worked the streets to help save up money to start a business or go back to school.

Many of my Kenyan friends believe prostitutes are all wealthy nymphomaniacs who don't need to ply the streets. I think they convince themselves of this to justify their abuse of the girls they pick up. I once learned that an employee of mine refused to pay a prostitute and then beat her. I found out because he called a couple of co-workers to rescue him from the police, who were called by the hotel when they heard the prostitute screaming for help. I fired the man. I couldn't tell him that beating the prostitute was the reason, but it was. I couldn't look at him after I heard this.

One close girlfriend got off the street after a few years. She didn't hate it, but I helped her start a couple of businesses that did rather well. After a year she got married. Then one day she met her husband's uncle, who recognized her from the street. He told his nephew, who left her. My friend was devastated. How unfair, I thought, that the uncle was the one paying for sex, yet my friend was the one who ultimately paid for their business relationship.

I think prostitution should be legal everywhere. Women have a right to use their bodies as they choose. And it's nonsense that prostitutes break up families. The men who sleep with prostitutes do that. Prostitutes provide a service, simple as that. Yes, some married men hire prostitutes. But so do plenty of other people who simply yearn for physical contact and affection and have no other outlets.

I no longer sleep with prostitutes, but would be honored to meet you someday, Sue. Stay safe and warm.

  22. I think this article was very well thought out and totally agree with the author. I wish we ladies had this options. I feel like I have to woo and romance and mbebeleza my man in order to get de-stressed after a particularly hard day. It would make things so much easier to just have sex pay for it, go home and just be good to him after am relaxed. I would be a little more relaxed, nicer, willing to listen, understanding..I don't know if am making sense but I get why prostitution certainly has worked for eons. Its to make marriages work :D

  23. Anyone angry or abusive towards sue should do some soul searching coz they are guilty of something inside them, she presents the world in a perspective no one else would admit they try to view it in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. very true sue,for a long while prostitution has been blamed as the dominant cause of HIV and broken marriages while national statistics show that it happens within the so called "happily maried couples"if prostitution was well accepted and legalized more marriages would have a chance as the elite "mpango wa kando corps" would surely be disbanded.Ive never with a prostitute but from I hear from my boys you are life savers.

  25. I personally dont know you..I wont even pretend to imagine how you look. Or perhaps, I know you. All plausible possibilities.
Nonetheless, one thing is for sure, you have a talent that's powered by real life experiences and forgive me if I'm wrong, a burning desire to discover yourself and your environment.
There's still room to refine your style, structure & play of words etc but all the same, its utterly refreshing. Good job Sue.
Ps. Write a paper journal on the side..It will come in handy one day.

  29. I like this its true, pros save marriages.Let all the men stop pretending and speak out, they are only afraid bcos of the stigma associated with being found at night in a dark alley by media men.otherwise leave a man alone in a room with a prostitute and u will be amazed with his performance.ask experinced shag girls how many men of the cloth come visit them if they keep it discreet and he will keep coming.I love my pros i treat them with love and care, they allow me to go back to my wife without worry of having strings attatched.on behalf of all the men we,WE LOVE U!

  30. Hi Sue,

I tried to post a comment just now....... but it disappeared!!

You are a very talented lady if your writing is anything to go by, and have a lot of insight into the 'human condition'.

I live here in London, the UK, and am also a sex worker, a dominatrix to be exact.

I am moved reading what you have said in regards to the spiritual role, I also feel that to a degree....... but am not as articulate as you:)

  34. Hi Sue. I'm not sure if you respond to comments posted on your blog but here goes. I lived in Nairobi during the 1980s. These days I spend some of my time writing novels. The latest is soon to go to publication here in South Africa. The first chapter discusses a Scottish tobacco dealer's relationships with Kibera girls. Because it's fiction, it's written partly to amuse, but it does generally present these girls/women in a positive light. I'm struggling with a bit of Swahili dialogue, the English interpretation for which is 'if you don't disappear, I'm going to arrange your death.' Am I accurate with 'Kama huna kwenda mbali nami kuwa wewe kuawa.'? Or is that really bad Kiswahili? Best Mike
